In 2014 our department is for the first time offering a course in English at MSc/PhD level «Evolutionary and taxonomic diversity of marine invertebrates». Application and program details are now available here. The couse has been developed within the joint educational project between Russia and Norway. The course is primarily meant for University of Tromsø and St Petersburg State University students, but students from other universities in Russia and abroad may also participate. Applications will open on Feb, 15.

Postdoc position available immediately at the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, Faculty of Biology and Soil Science, Saint-Petersburg State University, Russia. We are looking for a qualified, motivated postdoc skilled in bioinformatics to participate in several research projects in the areas of protistology and invertebrate zoology.

Research topics: A prospective postdoc is supposed to participate in several research projects in protistology and zoology where bioinformatics and NGS data analysis are required.

Duration: 2 years, prolongation for the 3rd yearpossible, depending on performance. The position is full-time (no extra-employment allowed); monthly brutto salary is 60 000 RUR (ca. 1900 US$), netto salary (after taxes) is ca. 52000 RUR. Generally, the proposed sumwell coversmonthly living costs in St-Petersburg, including rental of apartment.

Supervisor: Dr. Alexander Kudryavtsev; postdoc is also expected to communicate and cooperate with other project leaders at the Department.

The Department harborswell equipped laboratories for microscopic and molecular studies; we work at the international level in cooperation with the universities in Austria, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and UK. Equipment of brand new Core Facility Centers of St-Petersburg State University (http://biomed.spbu.ru, http://ccem.spbu.ru/ru/) is at our disposal for doing the research.

Requirements for a prospective candidate:
- PhD degree or equivalent, obtained not longer than 6 years ago.

Laboratory of freshwater and experimental hydrobiology welcomes to the seminar on the 16th of April at 11am. The seminar will take place in the Conference hall of the Zoological Institute RAS (Universitetskaya nab., 1). There will be two reports:

The resource centre «Molecular and cellular technologies development» organizes a series of lectures&seminars about modern techniques and opportunities of electron microscopy. The course will be presented by the head of Electron Microscopy Unit (Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki) Dr. Eija Jokitalo. The course will last 2 days and hence include two blocks of 3 lectures: Basics + Advances. The approximate dates are April, 22 and 23. Originally the course was planned for our stuff, but students are also allwed. Our department is involved into development of a new MSc program «Marine Biology» as a joint project with University of Tromso (UiT), Norway. In future this program will be implemented by at least two universities: SPGU and UiT, and the graduates will receive diplomas from both universities.
Anybody interested in working on the program's schedule or certain courses is welcome to join the meeting on Thursday, 14th of March, at 3 pm in the Head of Department's office.

We have now started creating a program for the scientific seminar of Invertebrate Zoology Department for 2013 (spring and autumn semesters). Hence are the following to requests.
  1. If you wish to share your ideas, observations, impressions etc. with colleagues during one of such seminars, please let us know the prospective topic of your talk and preferred time. As a reminder, the department's scientific seminar runs weekly on Tuesdays starting at 5:30pm and deals with a wide range of issues:
    • preliminary presentation of any qualification works (BSc students' year projects to doctoral thesis);
    • BSc students' year project defence;
    • MSc, PhD and postdoctoral scientific reports;
    • discussing topics of new scientific and educational projects;
    • discussing intermediate results of research in different areas of biology;
    • discussing final results of scientific and educational projects;
    • lectures on the hottest problems of biology;
    • discussing research organization problems;
    • discussing participation of our staff and students in summer schools, conferences, seminars etc.
    • discussing scientific, practical and emotional aspects of filed trips and scientific visits.
  2. Should you wish to dicuss any topic (scientific field, certain research, practical or educational issues) on a department's scientific seminar, please let us know. Congratulations to the department members Kirill Galaktionov, Anna Gonchar, Alexey Smirnov, Viktor Starunov and Vasily Zlatogursky, who received funding for academic travels abroad and to all the department members on two expedition support grants to Andrey Granovitch and Alexey Smirnov.
